Recovering the anchor from Steamer GREATER DETROIT

November 15, 2016

Several ISMA members participated in the recent recovery of an anchor from the Detroit River.
The anchor was from the Steamer Greater Detroit and had been at the bottom of the Detroit River since 1956.
The anchor will be refurbished and eventually placed on the patio of the Port of Detroit facility in downtown Detroit.
The project was organized by the Great Lakes Maritime Institute (GLMI).

The following Shipmasters (Detroit Lodge No. 7 except as noted) played a role in the anchor recovery:

John Polacsek and Malcolm McAdam of the GLMI coordinated the event. Jim Hogan, President and owner of the J.W.
Westcott Company, donated use of the company's M/V Joseph J. Hogan to serve as the dive boat. Westcott senior Captain Sam Buchanan prepped the dive boat for the event. Neil Schultheiss and Paul Jagenow served as crew on the dive boat. 1st Grand Vice President Lee Barnhill (Northeast Michigan Lodge No. 19) was Captain of the Tug Nancy Anne, which positioned the Durocher crane barge that was used to raise the anchor and bring it ashore.
