61st Annual Blessing of the Fleet

The 61st annual Blessing of the Fleet took place on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at Mariners' Church in downtown Detroit.


Members from seven ISMA lodges participated in the honor guard during the service:

1.  Port Huron Lodge No. 2 - Roger Hewlett and Cary Ketelhut

2.  Bay City Lodge No. 5 - Brian Eickel

3.  Detroit Lodge No. 7 - Patrick Beard, PGP Luke Clyburn, Jason Dmitruchina, Jay Downen, Jeff Haeseker, John Mantyk, Michael Nall, Raymond Oset, Randal Pagel, Scott Reynolds, James Semerad, and Christopher Stevens 

4.  Toledo Lodge No. 9 - PGP Harry Dusseau

5.  Georgian Bay-Huronia Lodge No. 15 – Grand Secretary-Treasurer Thomas Foster

6.  Northeast Michigan Lodge No. 19 - Grand President Patrick Hart

7.  Grand Traverse Lodge No. 23 – PGP Mark Mather and Lt. Robert Watrous


Other ISMA members in the congregation included Paul Jagenow and Kathy McGraw of Detroit Lodge No. 7 and Phil Knetchel of Toledo Lodge No. 9.


Lt. Robert Watrous of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and Grand Traverse Lodge No. 23 gave the Scripture Reading; Capt. Ray Oset, President of Detroit Lodge No. 7, read the Epistle; Rev. Deacon Frank Bateman read the Gospel; and Rev. Todd Meyer, Rector of Mariners' Church gave the Homily welcoming the congregation to the ceremony.

 

Captain Jason Dmitruchina of Detroit Lodge No. 7 was the recipient of this year's Lewis Ludington Award. During the presentation ceremony, Rev. Todd Meyer represented Mariners' Church and Scott Reynolds of Detroit Lodge No. 7, served as reader of the recipient's biography. The Ludington Family and Mariners’ Church established the Ludington Award in 1994.  Over the years, over 90 Shipmasters have been recognized for their contributions to the maritime industry on the Great Lakes.  Detroit Lodge No. 7 is honored to have a role in the selection process.


Jay Downen, Randy Pagel, Thomas Foster, Patrick Beard, Cary Ketelhut, and Michael Nall rang the Octorara bell as necrologist Kathy McGraw read the names of departed mariners.  Lt. Col. Wallace Bandeff, District Commander of the Detroit District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, rang a final toll for military personnel who have given their lives in service to the nation.


PGP Harry Dusseau, PGP Luke Clyburn, PGP Mark Mather and Grand President Patrick Hart presented the wreaths representing the maritime dangers of Storm, Reef, Fire and Collision. Brian Eickel, Chris Stevens and John Mantyk served as receivers during the presentation of flags.

 

Rector of Mariners' Church Rev. Todd Meyer officiated at the service, assisted by Deacon Frank Bateman. Both are members of Detroit Lodge No. 7. After the service, light refreshments were served in the Julia Anderson Room on the lower level of the church.
