128th Annual ISMA Grand Lodge Convention

The International
Ship Masters’ Association 128th annual convention was
held in Toledo, Ohio from Thursday, February 1 thru
Sunday, February 4, 2018. In addition to
business meetings, attendees heard speakers from
industry and government organizations, including Betty
Sutton, former administrator of the St. Lawrence
Seaway Development Corporation, and James H.I.
Weakley, President of Lake Carriers’
Association. Other speakers included Captain Amy
Beach, Chief of Prevention at USCG District 9 in
Cleveland, Paul C. LaMarre III, Director at the Port
of Monroe, as well as Amy Seeley and Eric Anderson
from NOAA. Marine Licensing Specialist Chuck
Kakuska, Lt. Commander, USCG (retired), gave an
overview of the latest credentialing news. Elected as Grand President for the ensuing year was Capt. Harold Dusseau, of Perrysburg, Ohio. Also elected were 1st Vice President Capt. Mark Mather, 2nd Vice President Capt. Joseph Ruch, and Secretary-Treasurer Capt. Brian Eickel. Two Grand President’s Awards for a rescue on the Great Lakes during 2017 were presented by outgoing Grand President Capt. Lee Barnhill. Receiving awards were Capt. Ryan Gazdecki and deckhand Joseph Buchanan of the J.W. Westcott Company for rescue of a pregnant woman and a Detroit Police officer from the Detroit River on April 17, 2017.
