Great Lakes Memorial Service

Several lodges of the ISMA were in attendance at the Great Lakes Memorial Service held at Detroit's Mariners' Church on Sunday, November 11, 2018. Members of Port Huron Lodge No. 2 (Roger Hewlett), Detroit Lodge No. 7 (Pat Beard, Jay M. Downen, Rick Scott, Brian Eickel, Chris Stevens, Ray Oset, Ron Ingram, Jack Callahan, Tom McMullen, Mike Pipia, Paul Jagenow, and John Mantyk) and Grand Traverse Lodge No. 23 (Radm Jerry Achenbach) were in attendance. Captains Beard, Scott, Eickel, Stevens, Oset, Ingram, Callahan and Mantyk served as official bell ringers and as members of the honor guard on the altar. The Octorara bell was rung 9 times for mariners lost on the various waters of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, plus a final toll for military personnel. Personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the General Consul of Canada and Sea Cadets also participated at the service. Fr. Jeffrey  M. Hubbard, Rector of Mariners' Church, officiated, assisted by Detroit Lodge member Deacon Frank Bateman. Detroit Lodge member Kathy McGraw was present in her capacity as Sexton of Mariners' Church.
