Lost Mariners Remembrance

The Lost Mariners Remembrance program was
held at Dossin Museum on
the evening of Wednesday, November 10, 2021. Several
members of Detroit Lodge
No. 7 were active participants in the ceremony: The program began with a Lantern Vigil
held at the Edmund
Fitzgerald anchor in the recently
renovated plaza adjacent to
the museum. A musical program followed in the
museum's DeRoy Hall. Lee
Murdock, Great Lakes Balladeer, gave a musical
presentation of
"Ballads of the Great Lakes Mariners" The wreath laying ceremony came next.
Grand Second Vice President
Luke Clyburn, Detroit Lodge 1st Vice Presidents Mike
Nall and Chris Stevens
served in the Honor Guard. Captains Clyburn and Stevens participated
in the wreath ceremony
handing flowers in honor of departed mariners to the
Coast Guard Response Boat
45632. The Coast Guard vessel carried the
flowers to midstream to be
placed on the waters of the Detroit River. The wreath
was provided by Detroit
Lodge No. 7. Ray Oset, Secretary-Treasurer of Detroit
Lodge No. 7, served as
bugler playing Taps and Last
Post salutes. Following the wreath ceremony, the honor
flotilla passed in
review. Captain Bill Griffore piloted the
mailboat J.W. Westcott II, one
of the vessels in the honor flotilla. Kathleen McGraw served as Necrologist,
reading the names of all
the vessels lost in the storms of 1871. Joel Stone was the keynote speaker. His
Lost Vessel Tribute was
"1871 - A Typically Terrible Year" with images and
stories about
vessels and crews lost in that fateful year. |
