Lost Mariners Remembrance

The Lost Mariners Remembrance program was
held at Dossin Museum on the evening of Thursday,
November 10, 2022. Several members of Detroit Lodge No.
7 were active participants in the ceremony, including
Joel Stone, Luke Clyburn, Mike Nall, Pat Beard, Ray
Oset, Joel Hepola, Julie Cortis-Redfield and Scott
Reynolds. Participating in the Honor Guard were James Weakley, President of Lake Carriers' Association; Capt. Brad Kelly of the U.S. Coast Guard, Sector Detroit; Constable Brian Kukhta, RCMP Windsor Shiprider; Capt. Luke Clyburn, President of the Noble Odyssey Foundation; and Capt. Mike Nall, President of I.S.M.A. Detroit Lodge No. 7. Detroit Lodge No. 7 members participated as follows: Joel Stone, retired Marine Curator at Dossin Museum, gave introductory remarks about the Lantern Ceremony at the Edmund Fitzgerald anchor memorial Grand 1st Vice President Luke Clyburn and Mike Nall, President of Detroit Lodge No. 7, served in the Honor Guard. Luke Clyburn and Mike Nall participated in the wreath laying ceremony and tossed flowers on the Detroit River in honor of departed mariners. Ray Oset, Secretary-Treasurer of Detroit Lodge No. 7, served as one of the buglers playing Taps. Joel Hepola and Julie Cortis-Redfield crewed the mailboat J.W. Westcott II, one of the vessels in the flotilla. Scott Reynolds piloted the Detroit Fireboat Curtis Randolph, also in the flotilla The Memorial Wreath which was placed on the Detroit River was provided by Detroit Lodge No. 7. The program included: a Lantern Vigil at the Edmund Fitzgerald Anchor, a musical program titled "Ballads of Great Lakes Mariners" by Lee Murdock, a memorial wreath laying ceremony on the Detroit River and a Lost Vessel Tribute presentation titled "Terror and Heroism on the paddle wheeler Atlantic (1848)" given by Michael Nagle |
