Ogden died shortly after an accidental
fall at his church on the evening of
Wednesday, April 24, 2013. Born in Port
Huron on September 3, 1925, Bernie was 87
years old.
Bernie became a member
of Detroit Lodge No. 7 on February 1, 1993 and
served as our lodge Sentinel from 1994 until
the time of his passing. He also served on the
lodge audit committee for many years.
Bernie truly loved the camaraderie of his
fellow ISMA members, and rarely
missed a membership meeting.
After graduating from
high school, Bernie sailed briefly in an
unlicensed capacity for the U.S. Steel
(Pittsburgh) Fleet. His
sailing days were short-lived, however,
as while aboard the Str. Joshua A.
Hatfield, he was drafted to
serve in the U.S. Navy. He was sent
to the Pacific Theater, where he served as a
signalman. Following WWII,
Bernie attended the University of
Detroit, where he earned a degree in economics
and accounting. Following college, he
began a career with the Cadillac Motor
Car division of General Motors, where he
worked as an auditor.
Bernie is survived by
his wife of 62 years, Margaret, and three
children: Karen (Richard) Dixon, Michael
(Renee) and Steven (Jill).
In addition to ISMA,
Bernie was also a 25-year member of
the Marine Historical Society of Detroit,
Dossin Marine Group, and the Cadillac &
LaSalle Club. He was also active at St. Paul's
Presbyterian Church in Livonia.
Visitation will take
place on Friday, April 26 from 4-8 PM at the Fred
Wood Funeral Home - Rice Chapel; 36100 Five Mile Road (East of
Levan) in Livonia.
Funeral
Services will be held on Saturday, April
27, at St. Paul's
Presbyterian Church; 27475 Five Mile Road (just West
of Inkster Road) in
Livonia. Gathering at 2:00 PM;
Service at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the
family has requested memorial
contributions be directed to Dossin Great
Lakes Museum, St. Paul's Presbyterian Church
or the Cadillac & LaSalle Club.
